چکیده

Representations of population models in terms of countable systems of particles are constructed, in which each particle has a ‘type’, typically recording both spatial position and genetic type, and a level. For finite intensity models, the levels are distributed on [0, λ], whereas in the infinite intensity limit λ→∞, at each time t, the joint distribution of types and levels is conditionally Poisson, with mean measure Ξ(t)×` where ` denotes Lebesgue measure and Ξ(t) is a measure-valued population process. The time-evolution of the levels captures the genealogies of the particles in the population. Key forces of ecology and genetics can be captured within this common framework. Models covered incorporate both individual and event based births and deaths, one-forone replacement, immigration, independent ‘thinning’ and independent or exchangeable spatial motion and mutation of individuals. Since birth and death probabilities can depend on type, they also include natural selection. The primary goal of the paper is to present particle-with-level or lookdown constructions for each of these elements of a population model. Then the elements can be combined to specify the desired model. In particular, a non-trivial extension of the spatial Λ-Fleming-Viot process is constructed.

Line-of-descent and genealogical processes, and their applications in population genetics models.

A variety of results for genealogical and line-of-descent processes that arise in connection with the theory of some classical selectively neutral population genetics models are reviewed. While some new results and derivations are included, the principle aim is to demonstrate the central importance and simplicity of genealogical Markov chains in this theory. Considerable attention is given to "...

Finite populations with frequency-dependent selection: a genealogical approach

Evolutionary models for populations of constant size are frequently studied using the Moran model, the Wright–Fisher model, or their diffusion limits. When evolution is neutral, a random genealogy given through Kingman's coalescent is used in order to understand basic properties of such models. Here, we address the use of a genealogical perspective for models with weak frequency-dependent selec...

Deep genealogical history without population differentiation: discordance between mtDNA and allozyme divergence in the zebra-tailed lizard (Callisaurus draconoides).

The peninsula of Baja California has a complex geological history that has strongly affected the regional biota. Genealogical histories of many species have revealed congruent patterns, which suggest that the peninsula was temporarily submerged at two locations. We sequenced a total of 1953 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial genome for 42 specimens of the zebra-tailed lizard (Callisaurus drac...

Coalescents and genealogical structure under neutrality.

Genealogical or coalescent methods have proved very useful in interpreting and understanding a wide range of population genetic data. Our aim is to illustrate some of the central ideas behind this approach. The primary focus is genealogy in neutral genetic models, for which the effects of demography can be separated from those of mutation. We describe the coalescent for panmictic populations of...

Postprocessing of genealogical trees.

We consider inference for demographic models and parameters based upon postprocessing the output of an MCMC method that generates samples of genealogical trees (from the posterior distribution for a specific prior distribution of the genealogy). This approach has the advantage of taking account of the uncertainty in the inference for the tree when making inferences about the demographic model a...
